| A time of dynamic change |
The Prison Service is currently in a process of dynamic change at the same time as significant changes in post 16 education and training organisation and provision are taking place. Consequently the new systems and procedures that affect the delivery of learning and skills in prisons are not yet fully embedded. |
| Career development within education and training in prisons |
Prison education contractors are obliged to provide in-service training and to offer support for the career progression of all staff delivering learning and skills. This includes the requirement that all teachers must be appropriately qualified to teach and from September 2007. |
| Career opportunities in the prison service |
It is possible for a person to come into prisons as a subject teacher and progress through a range of management opportunities. These can include prison service posts such as Head of Learning and Skills and Operational Manager posts (Governor Grades) via a conversion/direct entry scheme. |
