EMCETT Assignment for Mentors
Completion of the following assignment could be counted towards your ’30 hour’ professional registration requirement for CPD. If you wish to use it in this way, you might also consider using the Institute for Learning’s on-line e-portfolio, REfLECT to record your progress and reflections.
Classroom Observation
- In consultation with your mentee,
- identify some key development points for you mentee, with regard to classroom practice;
- consider how the constraints - and, possibly, opportunities - imposed by the custodial environment may impact on your mentee’s professional practice in the classroom;
- agree what aspects of teaching & learning you will focus on, having taken into account (a) and (b);
- establish a set of protocols for planning and carrying out a classroom observation at the custodial centre where your mentee is teaching (paying particular attention to the security-related aspects of your visit);
- consider what adaptations, if any, you will need to make in how you observe your mentee and subsequently provide developmental feedback and support.
- Maintain a reflective log of the activities described above together with a critical reflection on the whole experience of mentoring a colleague who is teaching in a custodial environment. (Pay particular attention to what you have learnt from this experience and what, if anything, you intend to differently, next time.
