Case Study

Return to the ‘Further Information and Activities’ page of this resource (or via the 6th section hyperlink on the opening page) to access the section relating to producing your own prison case study.

  1. Use this section, and its embedded hyperlinks, to:
    1. identify a custodial institution that is local or of interest to you;
    2. download recent inspection reports for this institution;
    3. produce a short study/portrait of the institution based on information gained from the inspection report/s (identifying the type and category of the institution and its inmates, the educational opportunities and any interesting educational opportunities or constraints) - you could use the Ranby case study as a model;
  2. speculate on how you would redesign your curriculum and adapt the delivery of your specialist subject to meet the needs of this particular group of learners, within this particular institution.
  3. produce some written reflections, identifying any personal and professional development priorities that would help you in achieving the adaptations described at (2), above.

(It may be useful to locate and contact a key person, within the institution, to see if they would be prepared to advise you or, possibly, arrange a visit to observe teaching practice and the learning environment.)
