How to produce your own prison case study

You might like to find information about a particular prison that you are perhaps interested in working in. The following steps will be useful:

Access the Prison Service’s Web site http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/ and find the chosen prison in the Prison Locator and click on Go. This brings up basic information about the prison, such as address, phone number and type of prisoners. It also includes pages devoted to the regime as well, visiting information and employment opportunities.

Go back to the home page and click on Prison Service News (the prison service’s magazine). Enter your chosen prison in the search box at the top of the page and click on Go. This will throw up any references to your prison from anywhere in the web-site, including articles that have appeared in past copies of Prison Service News.

Go back to the home page and select How prisons are regulated, from this page click on HM Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, this will take you to the following web-site http://inspectorates.homeoffice.gov.uk/hmiprisons/ from which you can insert the name of your prison in the Find a Report box. This will list all reports relating to your prison from which you can select your option and click to download the report.

You will now have sufficient information to enable you to write a detailed case study of your chosen prison.
