The protection aspect of security The Prison Service is committed to protecting the public by holding prisoners securely and pursuing policies to reduce re-offending. It is also required to keep prisoners safe from themselves, other prisoners and staff.
Different aspects of security Security in the prison service is an all-embracing term, whose definition includes physical security, security procedures, assessment procedures and intelligence gathering. Considerable weight is given good staff prisoner relationships and the use of privileges.
Security as it affects teaching in prisons Like anyone going into prison to work, teachers are required to have a check on their background through the Criminal Record Bureau. There are also restrictions on materials that can be taken into a prison for educational use.
General considerations about security Although every prison has a Security Department, security is of prime concern to every member of staff. All new staff are given a security talk after appointment and formal key training if they are to be issued with keys.
